Worth a watch - November...

This month's movies with an historical slant that I'd list among my favourites. The Conspirator is one of those dark horses that's well worth catching if you have the chance. Set in the period immediately after the Lincoln assassination, it's part thriller, part court-room drama and what makes it so compelling is that it's based on fact. The lighting and cinematography in Ridley Scott's The Duellists is, as you would expect, terrific. It's how I'd hope an adaptation of a Hawkwood novel might look if it were picked up for the screen. I came across Arn - Knight Templar by accident. Set during the time of the Crusades, it's based on a trilogy of books by the Swedish novelist Jan Guillou. Also inspired by a true story, Breaker Morant tells of three soldiers in the Boer War who are served up as political scapegoats of the British Empire. Crops up on the box every so often but, like the others, is available to view via the usual online rental and streaming sites.

The selection below features a bunch of previously recommended movies. Some will be instantly familiar but there are foreign dramas as well - French, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese and Korean - and yes - shock horror! - there are even some westerns in there, too, because if an oater isn't historical in context, I don't know what is...

Oh, and just to throw another ingredient into the mix, I've even included a comedy classic. You want a clue..? All together now: 'The pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pestle...'
