Another day, another Donald disaster (with apologies to Matt Damon)...

August 27, 2017

Further to my blog/rant - whatever you care to call it - of July 27th, in which I cogitated on The Donald's woeful grasp of history, there's an article in today's Independent featuring a list of the 17 books that could fix Donald Trump's ignorance of US history.

The titles are:

1. Slavery by Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans From the Civil War to World War II, by Douglas A Blackmon

2. Beyond the Battlefield: Race, Memory and the American Civil War, by David W Blight

3. Slavery and Public History: The Tough Stuff of American Memory, edited by James Oliver Horton

4. Lies Across America: What Our Historic Sites Get Wrong, by James Loewen

5. The Confederate Battle Flag: America's Most Embattled Emblem, by John Coski

6. Custer Died for Your Sins: An Indian Manifesto,

by Vine Deloria Jr

7. The Four Agreements, by Don Miguel Ruiz (the first of which states: 'Be impeccable with your word').

Yep, that one made me chuckle, too...

8.Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West, by Dee Brown

9. A People’s History of the United States, by Howard Zinn

10. Confederate Reckoning: Power and Politics in the Civil War South, by Stephanie McCurry

11. Appomattox: Victory, Defeat, and Freedom at the End of the Civil War, by Elizabeth Varon

12. Behind the Mask of Chivalry: The Making of the Second Ku Klux Klan, by Nancy MacLean

13. Charlottesville: Race and Terror, a documentary by Vice News.

14. Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America, by Ibram Kendi

15. A Shattered Nation: The Rise and Fall of the Confederacy, by Anne Sarah Rubin

16. White Rage: The Unspoken Truth About our Racial Divide, by Carol Anderson

and my own particular favourite:

17.

Personally, I can't help thinking they should start him off with something simple. How about this...?

Though, on second thoughts, that might contain too many big words....

OK, now I've just heard that Trump has threatened to shut down the government in order to secure funding to build his wall along the length of the US/Mexico border.

Maybe we should add this one to the list as well:

(I had a look on Amazon; sadly, there is no Bricklaying for Dummies...)
